Library Administration

HCLS administrative staff performs functions that support and maintain all branches in the library system, including financial administration such as purchasing supplies and payroll, acquiring library materials and getting them ready for our shelves, keeping the computer systems up and running, courier services to move books from branch to branch, and more. Many of our administrative staff are behind-the-scenes players, supporting library staff and public services.

John Brdecka

Executive Director

  • John joined HCLS in September 2021. He is an Illinois native, hailing from the Chicago-land area, and completed his MLIS at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. John brings sixteen years of experience to the position, making the leap from academic to public libraries after working in various positions at Northwestern University. When he’s not working or chasing one of his four children around the house, John enjoys golfing and sports.

Matthew Armstrong

IT Manager

  • Matthew joined HCLS in 2011. He is originally from Gulfport and attended college in Memphis. Matthew enjoys putting modern technologies in the hands of patrons and staff so that they are more empowered in our current digital landscape. Matthew spends his free time tinkering with technology and practicing illustration and photography.

Catherine Reyer

Office Manager

  • Catherine joined HCLS in 2015 and has previously worked as a Library Assistant and Cataloger. She enjoys helping coworkers and learning new things. Catherine has an Associate’s degree from Pearl River Community College. Catherine has lived all over Hancock County, first the Bay, then Waveland and Kiln. She spends her free time with family, crafting, and visiting Disney and Universal.

Ash Parker

Collections & Digital Services Librarian

  • Ash joined HCLS in 2018. She received her MLIS from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2021 and has a background in the social sciences. Ash loves all things data and is excited about expanding access to digital resources in public libraries. When she isn’t trying to learn something new, Ash enjoys reading and spending time outside surrounded by nature.

Paulette Necaise

Technical Services Manager

  • Paulette joined HCLS in 2000 and has worn many hats for the library—as a library assistant, a cataloger, and as a circulation manager. Paulette enjoys processing and seeing all the new books. In her free time, Paulette enjoys crafting and learning to make stained glass.

Rachel Maloy

Cataloger

  • Rachel joined HCLS in 2022. She has years of library experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Mississippi State University. Rachel is originally from Tennessee. she enjoys being active—running, kickboxing or hiking—and hopes one day to hike the Appalachian Trail. Rachel has two cats—Draco and Tyrion.

Kevin Cole

PR/Marketing Coordinator

  • Kevin joined HCLS in 2021 as a library assistant, before coming to Administration. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and has served on the Boards of multiple non-profit organizations. Kevin previously worked in marketing for both visual and performing arts organizations and has managed education and workforce development projects. Kevin has also coached youth sports, and now pursues his passion for art collecting, as well as gardening and landscaping, DIY projects, and philanthropy.

Joel Johnston

Maintenance Technician/Courier

  • Joel joined HCLS in 2007. He has called many places home, including Denver, Colorado, and Maryland, but the Gulf Coast has been home since the 1970s. Joel loves the mission of a lending library and the good done for the community. His friendly face is welcomed at each branch as the bringer-of-books and general helper. In his free time, he enjoys watching television and movies with his dog, Daisy.

Raven Wallace

Administrative Assistant

  • Raven joined HCLS in 2015. She worked as a library assistant at Bay St. Louis before joining Administration. She has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Raven loves working for an organization that feels like a family —her joy and contagious laughter bring people together. Her family is from Bay St. Louis, and she grew up in Hattiesburg. Raven has lived on the Coast for over a decade and loves it here. In her free time, Raven makes jewelry, resin art, t-shirts, and personal care products.

HCLS is represented by five branch libraries: Bay St. Louis, East Hancock in Diamondhead, Kiln, Waveland, and Pearlington. Each branch is uniquely tuned to the community it serves. We are proud of the amazing service our staff provides—and our friendly, professional service is consistently praised by the community. From checking out books and videos, helping you to master new technology, or recommending your next great read, these are the faces that welcome Hancock County to our libraries.

Bay St. Louis Public Library

Alex Nygaard

Branch Manager

  • Alex joined HCLS in September 2024 after relocating to Mississippi from Utah by way of the Oregon Coast. Alex brings with her a BA in English from the University of Utah, along with a background in education, marketing, and hospitality.

Brooke, Leah, Mariah, Andrea (now at Kiln), Sally, Megan (not pictured) and Alex (not pictured) provide excellent service at our main library in Bay St. Louis. Whether you are singing along at weekly Storytime, munching popcorn at Matinee in the Bay, or discovering something new at Authors & Characters, you will appreciate their friendly faces and helpful attention.

East Hancock Public Library

Leah Holmes

Branch Manager

  • Leah joined HCLS in 2022. She received her Ph.D. (ABD) from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2007. She brings over twenty years of experience in education, most recently as an English instructor and she continues to teach literature and humanities for the USM OLLI program. Leah loves getting to know the patrons and in her off time she creates glass bead art (called lampwork) and reads 19th-century mysteries and detective stories. Her latest hobby is learning to play the ukelele.

Leah (not pictured), Mary Jo, Joanna, Kathleen, Laura, and Audrey serve the growing population of Diamondhead at the East Hancock library branch. Whether you are looking for enriching arts and crafts programs, meeting your neighbors, or looking for your next favorite author, their smiling faces and personal attention will brighten your day.

Kiln Public Library

Andrea Moreau

Interim Branch Manager

  • Andrea joined HCLS in January 2024. She is a New Orleans native and completed her MLIS and PhD. (ABD) at USM. Andrea was a school librarian for more than 17 years. She is also a writer of many articles for a variety of publications and is the author of four books for children. She enjoys traveling, playing with her dogs, and reading sci-fi and fantasy books.

Virginia, Amanda, Judy, and Andrea (not pictured) are always ready to help the patrons of Kiln and rural communities in the north of Hancock County. From their excellent gardening programs to the fantastic displays, you will always find a friendly and comfortable community hub for you and your family to visit.

Waveland Public Library

Angela Christoffer

Lead Branch Manager

  • Angie joined HCLS in 2008, beginning as a circulation clerk in a tiny trailer donated by the Gates Foundation after the Waveland library was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. She helped re-open the new Waveland branch in 2010 and has been branch manager since 2016. Angie enjoys helping patrons and developing programs for the community. Originally from Laplace, Louisiana, Angie has lived in Hancock County for over thirty years. In her free time she loves to travel, go boating, and walk on the beach with her dog.

Nonnie, Shannon, Cathy, Angie, and Brailey bring amazing programs and caring service to the patrons of Waveland Library. With an exciting variety of programs—including pop-up fitness activities on the beach—staff provide opportunities for the whole family to learn and grow.

Pearlington Public Library

Andrea Pack

Branch Manager

  • Andrea joined HCLS in 2007 and has been the Pearlington branch manager since 2011. She has years of experience supporting youth education and development in Hancock County. Andrea is a lifelong resident of Pearlington and never stops advocating for her community. She works to coordinate Pearlington Impact and provide needed services to the community. Andrea enjoys spending free time with her grandchildren or camping in her home-away-from-home on wheels.

Andrea, Reagan, Katelin, and Carl (not pictured) provide excellent service and an important community hub for Pearlington. This is the “place to go” for everyone—from youth enjoying Storytime and access to games and research tools to adults meeting up for health and enrichment programs. With regular events like Trunk or Treat and the Bunny Hop, staff make the library the place to be in Pearlington.
